History
The Attard Bros Group story spans over 50 years, telling of a small, honest family business with humble beginnings that grew into a highly respected name in local industry.
What started out as just two brothers working in construction now boasts an employment roster of over 300 people.
The success of Attard Bros demonstrates the importance of a resilient mindset and never compromising one’s core values in the pursuit of forward-looking, risk-taking entrepreneurial endeavours.
1977 - 78
Our Founder and Chairman Michael Attard, together with his brother, planted the early seeds of the Attard Bros company back in 1977 with a small painting and plastering business. As their clientele grew, so did their reputation for delivering high quality work, and by 1978, they were entrusted with their first construction project.
With just two trucks and a small team of ten, Michael and his brother embraced every opportunity that came their way and they were soon in need of more space to expand their business. From their parents’ Mgarr home, to a warehouse in Mosta, to a larger premises in Birkirkara, every step forward was earned through hard work and commitment, ultimately leading them to the 40,000-square-meter plant in Ta’ Qali in 1981, where Attard Bros continues to build its legacy today.
1981 - 87
The 1980s opened fresh horizons for Attard Bros, as they made the decision to diversify their business into producing their own construction materials, giving them new control over the quality of the raw materials used on their projects, as well as positioning themselves as suppliers to other contractors and builders. This bold move saw them invest in a concrete batching plant and five ready-mix trucks in 1982, followed by brick-making and steel reinforcement plants in 1986, and a concrete plank-making facility, a second concrete batching plant and a concrete pump in 1987.
It is also during this time that they began producing their own joinery, opening Modern Woodwork, later rebranded as Eurocraft, a joinery subsidiary. This custom joinery operation added significant value to their client offering with customized fit-out and furniture solutions, a service they still offer today.
With this new arsenal of materials and services, they took on several major projects, including government housing, schools, and Mistra Village, complete with 60 flats and a sports complex.
1989
In 1989, Michael continued operations on his own as his brother left the family business, spearheading a visionary decision to invest more heavily in their brick-making capacity, increasing their production to 7000 bricks a day. Despite the modest demand for bricks at the time, Michael saw an opportunity to be a leader in local brick production. The risk paid off, with the demand for bricks growing as construction methods on the market evolved and changed.
1992-2002
From schools, hotels and office blocks, the 1990s were a fruitful period for Attard Bros, seeing them contribute to works on the Malta International Airport Terminal (1992), the Power Station and the Malta Freeport (1994-1998), and several Corinthia-group projects locally and abroad between 1999-2002, including the Corinthia San Gorg Hotel, the Corinthia Marina Hotel, and the 5-star Corinthia Bab Africa Hotel in Libya.
1996
Never taking their corporate and social responsibility for granted, in 1996 Attard Bros acquired the ISO 9001 certification (now in its ISO 9001:2015 edition), a globally recognized standard in Quality Management Systems. They were the first construction company in Malta to obtain this, signaling a strategic commitment from their leadership to keeping Quality at the forefront of everything they do. Since then, they have also acquired ISO 45001:2018 certification for Occupational Health and Safety Management in 2023, and are working towards achieving ISO 14001:2015 in Environmental Management Systems, all of which require rigorous, continuously audited processes that ensure best practices both on and off-site.
2009
Today, Attard Bros produces over 22,000 bricks a day under the most stringent quality standards, the result of a substantial 2009 investment in their HES Concrete Blocks Manufacturing Plant. It has become a cornerstone for the company, supplying the best bricks on the island with state-of-the-art methods and materials.
2010-15
By the rollover of the new millennium, there was hardly a sector that Attard Bros had not been involved in in one way or another, as they went from strength to strength, taking on large and prestigious projects that shaped Malta as a country both in the private and public sector. 2010 saw them working on the early phases of the Pender Gardens project, as well as the Farsons New Brew House, while in 2014 and 2015 they made their mark on the City Gate Opera House, the Delimara Power Station and the Fort St. Angelo restoration. More recently in 2019, they returned to the Pender Gardens project, completing Phase 16 and the new tower.
