Green materials for environmental and land preservation.
Quarrying has long been a vital industry in Malta, providing essential materials for the construction sector. The island’s unique geology, predominantly composed of limestone, has shaped its architectural heritage and continues to support modern construction needs.
Our company, one of the first, decided in the 1990s to close its construction materials quarry, now reabsorbed into the local urban fabric, in order to shift the focus of production to industrialised materials that guarantee adequate structural resistance characteristics while reducing the use of constituents. Basically, this is due to the fact that thanks to the industrial production we can have materials with a greater presence of voids than solids, exploiting the intrinsic characteristics of mechanical resistance that can be guaranteed by a quality-controlled production process.
Today, alongside the normal industrialised products, we have some production lines dedicated to more specifically green products, based on the use of concrete with low environmental impact and reduced CO2 emissions and aggregates from recycling and regrinding of rubble and production waste, which represent a very important contribution to the reduction of quarries at national and global level.

Creating a resilient built landscape: how sustainable building materials can benefit your construction project.
The global demand for resilient housing and cities is expected to continue growing at a very fast pace. As the world becomes more environmentally conscious, more people are turning to sustainable building materials for their construction projects. Sustainable building materials are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient. They are designed to reduce the impact on the environment throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials to their disposal and reuse. Sustainable building materials are made from renewable resources and produced using renewable energy.
All materials used in our production are certified and come from a controlled supply chain. The same applies to all building materials that we import from abroad and have selected on the international market based on specific criteria to provide the Maltese market with construction materials which are not only sustainable during the production phase (reduced CO2 footprint during production, recycled raw materials or materials of mineral origin with a low environmental impact, production with low-energy consumption) but also during their whole life-cycle being recyclable and remanufacturable in order to guarantee a low environmental impact for future generations as well.
Structural and Lightweight, a strategic approach:
Lightweight construction represents an alternative approach to eco-friendly building. Creating lighter structures allows for the design of more efficient load-bearing elements, reducing the need for binders and optimizing the solid/void ratio in a building's design. At the same time, Lightweight materials typically utilize 'expanded' aggregates, which inherently decrease the aggregate quantity needed per unit volume of construction, thereby reducing the overall demand for aggregates in building projects. In evaluating the impact of building materials, it is crucial to consider not only the environmental impact of quarrying, but also the effects of transportation, storage, and all intermediate steps. Each stage might contributes to environmental degradation through fuel consumption, fine dust production, and other factors.
As an intrinsic part of our efforts towards a smarter and more sustainable way of doing construction, we have created a complete structural lightweight product line which includes all the basic components of construction most commonly found in our market: concrete, precast structural elements, and blocks to make load-bearing walls, and partitions.
Due to the scarcity of land available for development, renovation of existing buildings is a growing market and an integral part of responsible land use. This often entails working in suboptimal structural conditions or on buildings with foundation structures of limited capacity. Our specific line of structural lightweight products meets the most popular dimensional standards, quality and certified strength to ISO and BSI standards, but with up to 25% less weight. Lightweight means more efficient transportation, less labor and less potential for accidents on the construction site, less inert mass and less energy used during production. Whether they are loaded with low-density inert particles or based on aerated mixtures, Attard Bros structural lightweight solutions also have better thermal and soundproofing performance.
